At times, it may be critical that clients have the assurance that a service provider is accountable to a regulator for ongoing competence and complaints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Occupational therapists are expected to communicate their title clearly, so that the public can easily identify them as registrants of the College. They are also expected to ensure that those under their supervision communicate their own approved titles properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Occupational therapists are expected to:<\/em><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-1-use-their-title-and-name-correctly\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>1. Use their title and name correctly<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list\">\n        <div class=\"labeled-list-inner\">\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>1.1<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>Accurately present themselves using the protected title \u201coccupational therapist\u201d or \u201cOT Reg. (Ont.).\u201d The French title is \u201cergoth\u00e9rapeute\u201d or \u201cErg. Aut. (Ont.).\u201d Alternatively, use the acceptable psychotherapist title per the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/standards-and-resources\/resources\/standard-for-psychotherapy-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Standard for Psychotherapy<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>1.2<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>Place the protected title in a position of prominence in all communications.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>1.3<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>Stop using any protected title or designation once they have resigned from the profession (see Appendix 1). Occupational therapists who misuse title can be found to be engaging in professional misconduct (<em>Ontario Regulation 95\/07, Professional Misconduct<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>1.4<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>Use other titles or designations only when the occupational therapist is actively practising. For example, the occupational therapist cannot use \u201cAssistive Devices Program Authorizer\u201d when they are no longer a registered authorizer.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>1.5<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>Practise using only their name as entered in the College\u2019s public register (List of Registered Occupational Therapists). Occupational therapists who wish to use a different name must ensure that their preferred name is recorded with the College and that it appears on the public register.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>1.6<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>When choosing to communicate any educational degrees to clients and the public, display the protected title \u201coccupational therapist\u201d or the designation \u201cOT Reg. (Ont.)\u201d in addition to their degrees. Even if holding a degree in occupational therapy, the individual must register with the College to use any version of the title \u201coccupational therapist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>1.7<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>When employment requires the qualification of \u201coccupational therapist\u201d but the designation is not part of the job title (for example, Case Manager or Practice Lead), ensure that proper use of title is maintained. One example is \u201cFirst Name Last Name, OT Reg. (Ont.), Case Manager.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-2-ensure-that-those-they-supervise-use-an-approved-title\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>2. Ensure that those they supervise use an approved title<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list\">\n        <div class=\"labeled-list-inner\">\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>2.1<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>Ensure that occupational therapy students use only the title \u201cstudent occupational therapist\u201d or \u201cstudent OT.\u201d The French equivalents are \u201c\u00e9tudiant(e) en ergoth\u00e9rapie\u201d or \u201c\u00e9tudiant(e) en erg.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>2.2<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>Ensure that students who are from another profession and under the occupational therapist\u2019s supervision present their student title clearly to clients, other professionals, partners, and interested parties.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>2.3<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>Ensure that College applicants completing a refresher program under the occupational therapist\u2019s supervision use the title \u201ccandidate occupational therapist\u201d or \u201ccandidate OT.\u201d For an explanation of the different types of applicants, including those not permitted to use these titles, see Appendix 2.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-3-avoid-specialist-titles-designations-and-abbreviations\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>3. Avoid specialist titles, designations, and abbreviations<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list\">\n        <div class=\"labeled-list-inner\">\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>3.1<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>Never use a title or designation that indicates or implies that the occupational therapist is a specialist. The College does not have specialist designations. It is considered professional misconduct to use a term, title, or designation indicating or implying specialization in the profession.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>3.2<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>When communicating an area of practice within the profession of occupational therapy to the public, use a term such as \u201cpractising in\u201d or \u201cwith a focus in.\u201d One example is \u201cFirst Name Last Name, OT Reg. (Ont.), Practising in Driver Rehabilitation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-4-accurately-communicate-additional-credentials\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>4. Accurately communicate additional credentials<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list\">\n        <div class=\"labeled-list-inner\">\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>4.1<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>Include only credentials that represent a training program that is current, evidence-informed, and theoretically sound.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>4.2<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>Before communicating the credential to the public, ensure that it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is valid and accurate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applies to the scope of occupational therapy practice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relates to the occupational therapist\u2019s current area of practice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depicts the level of credential earned<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is verifiable, with evidence to be provided by the occupational therapist upon request<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>4.3<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>When communicating with clients and the public, use the protected title \u201coccupational therapist\u201d or the designation \u201cOT Reg. (Ont.)\u201d and the full name of the additional credentials. One example is \u201cFirst Name Last Name, MSc (OT), OT Reg. (Ont.), Certified Hand Therapist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>4.4<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>When communicating with an audience who recognizes the credential, use an abbreviation, if desired. For example, an occupational therapist publishing research in a journal on hand therapy may use the abbreviation \u201cCHT\u201d to represent \u201cCertified Hand Therapist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>4.5<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>Maintain competence associated with additional credentials communicated to the public, and upon request, provide evidence of ongoing competence.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-5-use-the-title-doctor-correctly\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>5. Use the title \u201cdoctor\u201d correctly<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list\">\n        <div class=\"labeled-list-inner\">\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>5.1<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>Use the title \u201cdoctor\u201d only as permitted by the&nbsp;<em>Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991<\/em>. The Act permits the use of this title by chiropractors, dentists, naturopaths, optometrists, physicians, and psychologists.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"labeled-list-item\">\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-label\">\n        <h3>5.2<\/h3>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"labeled-list-item-inner\">\n\n<p>When holding a doctorate degree such as a PhD or a clinical doctorate of occupational therapy (OTD), use the title \u201cdoctor\u201d for only non-clinical purposes. Occupational therapists who have resigned from the College cannot use the protected title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former registrants may be called upon to share knowledge with service groups, the public, students, and other occupational therapists or professionals through formats such as presentations, articles, and book chapters. Former registrants should clearly communicate that they were educated as an occupational therapist or used to be an occupational therapist, but do not currently provide occupational therapy services.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up is-collapsible is-collapsed align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-appendix-2-college-applicants\">\n    <div class=\"section-header section-header-toggleable\">\n        <h2>Appendix 2: College Applicants<\/h2>\n                <button class=\"section-toggle\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-live=\"polite\">\n            <span class=\"toggle-icon\"><i class=\"far fa-angle-down\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span>\n        <\/button>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>Individuals who have applied for registration with the College but are not yet registered are called \u201capplicants.\u201d Applicants are not legally entitled to work as occupational therapists in Ontario. Applicants awaiting confirmation of registration status from the College, for either a provisional, general, or temporary certificate of registration, are not permitted to use the protected title or designation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nor can applicants use the title \u201ccandidate occupational therapist.\u201d The \u201ccandidate\u201d title is reserved for individuals completing a College-approved clinical refresher placement under the supervision of a registered occupational therapist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicants are also not permitted to start work, training, or orientation for a job as an occupational therapist.
