{"id":1851,"date":"2022-10-01T19:21:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-01T23:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/live-coto.pantheonsite.io\/?post_type=resource&#038;p=1851"},"modified":"2025-01-29T16:12:31","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T21:12:31","slug":"client-wants-to-make-a-complaint-to-the-college","status":"publish","type":"resource","link":"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/resources\/client-wants-to-make-a-complaint-to-the-college\/","title":{"rendered":"Client wants to make a complaint to the College"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong>&nbsp;<em>What should I do if my client tells me they want to make a complaint to the College?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Answer:<\/strong>&nbsp;If a concern or issue arises during or after occupational therapy service delivery, your client may wish to make a complaint to the College about your conduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an occupational therapist, it is your responsibility, if your client requests it, to provide information about how to file a complaint with the College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/statute\/91o33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Occupational Therapy Act, 1991<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;states that it is an act of professional misconduct to fail \u201cto advise a client, a client\u2019s authorized representative or a member of the public, when requested, of his or her ability to file a complaint with the College and the procedure for doing so\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although you should not dissuade a client from filing a complaint with the College, you should try and resolve the issue with them when you have been made aware of any issue or concern. A client may not fully understand what will happen after an occupational therapy assessment is completed and may be surprised and upset with the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes a client may have expectations that were not met. If you notice your client seems upset or withdrawn, consider if there is a way you can address and de-escalate the situation. Listen to your client in order to come to a resolution.
