We work together to ensure quality occupational therapy services across the province.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-integrating-edi-throughout-the-college-and-the-profession\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>Integrating EDI throughout the College and the Profession<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>As part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/about-the-college\/strategic-priorities\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"195\">2024 &#8211; 2027 Strategic Priorities<\/a>, COTO has a dedicated goal to integrate the practices of equity, diversity and inclusion throughout the College and profession.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-expectation-for-occupational-therapists-to-provide-culturally-safer-services\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>Expectation for occupational therapists to provide culturally safer services<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>Competencies for Occupational Therapists in Canada&nbsp;(2021)&nbsp;<\/em>outlines the expectation for occupational therapists to provide&nbsp;<strong>culturally safer&nbsp;<\/strong>health services, while upholding the human rights of all clients and people who work with occupational therapists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Culture, Equity and Justice section of the Competencies says occupational therapists are expected to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Promote equity in practice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promote anti-oppressive behaviour and culturally safer, inclusive relationships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contribute to equitable access to occupational participation and occupational therapy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more, view the&nbsp;<a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/competencies-for-occupational-therapists-in-canada-2021-final-en-web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Competencies for Occupational Therapists in Canada<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Occupational therapists can encourage clients to share what they consider to be safe and support them in drawing strength from their identity, culture, and community. Cultural safety recognizes that people from different communities may not feel safe in healthcare settings. Some people may feel afraid or distrustful because of historical or ongoing experiences of discrimination.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You should expect your therapist to be willing to talk openly with you and handle feedback well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You should expect your occupational therapist to adjust their approach to fit your needs. Making services culturally safer means understanding power dynamics and making sure everyone feels safe. Occupational therapists should understand they are in a position of power and privilege as health care providers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn more about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/public\/working-with-an-ot\/#what-to-expect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What to Expect From Your Occupational Therapist<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-what-is-the-college-doing\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>What is the College doing?<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">National eLearning Module<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>COTO is working together with national regulators (<a href=\"https:\/\/acotro-acore.org\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/acotro-acore.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ACOTRO<\/a>) to develop a national eLearning Module for occupational therapists across Canada on Advancing Culture, Equity and Justice in Occupational Therapy Practice. The module explores the topic of cultural humility and equity in occupational therapy practice and applies to occupational therapists in diverse practice areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The module focuses on real scenarios to engage professionals and build awareness and application to practice. It introduces concepts related to culture and equity, with the understanding that terminology and experiences are evolving and incorporating humility into practice is a lifelong endeavour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is for occupational therapists in both clinical and non-clinical roles to apply this learning directly to their daily work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sociodemographic data collection<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, COTO began including voluntary questions on Indigenous identity and gender identity in our application and renewal forms.\u00a0This year, COTO added racialized group identity. This data will help us better understand demographic trends in the profession and guide efforts to improve equity and inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anonymous data will be used for statistical purposes such as reports and analyses, and to provide information about group representation in the profession. It will also help&nbsp;inform initiatives to address systemic inequity and other barriers in our health system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn more and see our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/registrants\/registration-services\/sociodemographic-data-collection-faq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sociodemographic Data Collection FAQ<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Working with system partners<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/about-the-college\/strategic-priorities\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"195\">2024 &#8211; 2027 Strategic Priorities<\/a>, we also work together with our health system partners to support and advance EDI in health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Health Profession Regulators of Ontario (HPRO) Anti-Racism Steering Committee<\/strong>: COTO works with other health regulatory colleges to identify systemic racism and implement tangible solutions that help build health systems and practices that reinforce EDI.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ontario Ministry of Health and College Performance Measurement Framework<\/strong>: Annually, COTO also reports on the organization\u2019s EDI progress to the Ministry of Health through the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/about-the-college\/reports-accountability\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"201\">College Performance Measurement Framework (CPMF)<\/a>&nbsp;tool.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Culture, Equity, and Justice in Occupational Therapy Practice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>COTO has a resource on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/registrants\/culture-equity-justice\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"269\"><em>Culture, Equity, and Justice in Occupational Therapy Practice<\/em><\/a>. The intent of this document is to be a starting point to help occupational therapists apply principles of culture, equity, and justice in their practice. This resource complements the&nbsp;<em>Competencies for Occupational Therapists in Canada<\/em>&nbsp;(2021), Domain C: Culture, Equity and Justice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Equity Perspectives Advisory Committee<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This advisory committee explores, discusses and provides recommendations on current occupational therapy practice issues relevant to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).&nbsp;They have provided input on topics such as: College policies, standards, the&nbsp;<em>Culture, Equity, and Justice in Occupational Therapy Practice<\/em>&nbsp;document and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Committee members are volunteer occupational therapists who are members of one or more equity-deserving groups, including: Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, LGBTQ2SIA+ and\/or those who face historic and ongoing systemic oppression due to social identities and positions including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, dis\/ability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation and\/or religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/about\/work-with-indigenous-communities\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"199\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">See our Work with Indigenous Communities page for information on our Indigenous Insights Advisory Committee<\/a><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-additional-resources\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>Additional Resources<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>COTO has compiled a list of resources for patients, clients, occupational therapists, and others who want to learn more about equity, diversity, and inclusion.
