Carefully review the information below to determine the best option for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you will be registering in another jurisdiction, visit our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/registrants\/practising-outside-ontario\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"221\">Practising Outside Ontario<\/a>&nbsp;page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some examples of leaves of absence include: parental leave (maternity or paternity leave), a paid or unpaid leave of absence, or being on leave from work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please review the options below before resigning from the College.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-option-1-maintain-your-registration-and-return-to-practice-at-any-time-during-the-year\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>Option 1: Maintain your registration and return to practice at any time during the year.<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>If you choose to maintain your registration, you must continue to meet all&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/resources\/professional-obligations\/\" data-type=\"resource\" data-id=\"2415\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College requirements<\/a>.<br><br>This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keeping your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/otportal.coto.org\/SignIn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COTO Portal<\/a>&nbsp;profile up to date<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carrying&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/registrants\/professional-liability-insurance\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1447\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">professional liability insurance<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meeting the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/registrants\/registration-services\/maintaining-currency\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">current practice hours requirement<\/a>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completing your annual Quality Assurance (QA) requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Renewing your registration annually by the May 31 deadline<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-option-2-resign-your-registration\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>Option 2: Resign your registration<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>If you choose to resign, you will no longer be registered with the College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means you cannot work as an occupational therapist or use the title \u201coccupational therapist\u201d, \u201cOT\u201d, or the designation \u201cOT Reg. (Ont.)\u201d in Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you resign, you will need to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/applicants\/reapplying-to-the-college\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"335\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reapply<\/a>&nbsp;to the College and receive a new certificate of registration prior to returning to practice in Ontario. This generally involves submitting the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Online application<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Results of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/applicants\/vulnerable-sector-checks\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vulnerable Sector Check<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completed <strong>Regulatory History Form<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/regulatory-history-form.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"1451\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">English form<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/COTO-Regulatory-History-Form-FR.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"5547\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">French Form<\/a>)&nbsp;if you\u2019ve been registered in another jurisdiction or profession<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evidence of 600 occupational therapy practice hours within the past three years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evidence of professional liability insurance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applicable fees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You do not need to resubmit documentation the College already has on file such as transcripts or exam results. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For information on reapplying, visit steps:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/otportal.coto.org\/SignIn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Log in to the COTO Portal<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select \u201cResign Certificate\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow the instructions&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-refunds\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>Refunds<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>If you resign your registration between June 1 and the last day of February, a refund will be issued if you meet the following conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You held a provisional or general certificate of registration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You do not owe money to the College<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You stop practising occupational therapy and resign on or before the following dates:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\" style=\"border-width:2px\"><tbody><tr><th><strong>Refund Period<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Refund Amount<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><tr><td>By August 31<\/td><td>$591.47<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>By November 30<\/td><td>$394.31<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>By last day of February<\/td><td>$197.16<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you meet the conditions, no action is required to obtain a refund.&nbsp;<strong>The refund will be processed at the end of the refund period to the original method of payment.<\/strong>&nbsp;If you paid by online
