{"id":225,"date":"2024-11-19T17:57:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-19T22:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/live-coto.pantheonsite.io\/?page_id=225"},"modified":"2026-02-26T15:21:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T20:21:14","slug":"provisional-registration","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/registrants\/provisional-registration\/","title":{"rendered":"Provisional Registration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-what-is-provisional-registration\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>What is Provisional Registration?<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>Provisional registration is a class of registration that may be issued to applicants who are waiting to write the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.notce-enae.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Occupational Therapy Certification Examination<\/a>\u00a0(NOTCE).<br><br>Provisional occupational therapists may practice the full scope of occupational therapy under the supervision of a general occupational therapist who has been approved by the College.\u00a0This condition is listed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/otportal.coto.org\/Public-Register-Search-Custom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">List of Registered Occupational Therapists<\/a> profile of all provisional occupational therapists.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br>To be eligible for provisional registration, applicants must meet all other registration requirements:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>be registered for the next available sitting of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.notce-enae.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NOTCE<\/a>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have an offer of employment where they will be supervised by an occupational therapist who has held general registration for at least one year,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>submit a completed Provisional Registration Supervision Agreement&nbsp; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/provisional-registation-supervision-agreement-form.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"1433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">English<\/a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/entente-de-supervision-certificat-dexercice-provisoire.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"1432\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">French<\/a>),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>successfully complete the examination within the specified timeframe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-national-occupational-therapy-certification-exam-notce-information-and-requirements\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>National Occupational Therapy Certification Exam (NOTCE) Information and Requirements<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>The approved exam is the National Occupational Therapy Certification Examination (NOTCE) administered by the Canadian Association of Occupation Therapists (CAOT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learn about the exam by visiting&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.notce-enae.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notce-enae.ca<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Provisional occupational therapists are required to sit the exam at the first available sitting. This is a condition of registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you pass the exam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you pass the exam, when the College receives the exam results from CAOT, we will automatically issue general registration and supervision will no longer be required. You will be informed of this change by email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you fail the exam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First Attempt<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are unsuccessful at your first exam attempt, you may extend your provisional registration by 60 days after the next available exam sitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do so, you must meet the following requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Submit a new Provisional Registration Supervision Agreement&nbsp; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/provisional-registation-supervision-agreement-form.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"1433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">English<\/a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/entente-de-supervision-certificat-dexercice-provisoire.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"1432\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">French<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit any undertakings required by the Registrar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide proof you are registered for the next available exam sitting.&nbsp;<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If approved, your provisional registration will be extended up to 60 days after the next exam date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Second Attempt<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are unsuccessful at your second exam attempt, your provisional registration will expire the day the College receives the exam results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expired registration means you are no longer permitted to practice as a provisional occupational therapist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens if I am not able to sit the next available exam?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Under exception circumstances (for example, a medical issue, death in the family, or other significant hardship), you may be granted a deferral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Requests for deferral of the exam must be submitted in writing, prior to the exam, or within 10 days following the exam. Evidence to support the request for deferral must be provided (for example, a doctor&#8217;s note). When providing offsite supervision, plans must be in place to manage issues related to practice (for example, consent, assessment, and treatment) and mitigate any risks. The occupational therapist supervisor and provisional occupational therapist are expected to establish a supervision and communication plan.
