Please include a brief message, your first and last name and phone number.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do I meet the requirements?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-education-clinical-practicum\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>Education &#038; Clinical Practicum<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>You will meet the education and clinical practicum requirement by completing the Substantial Equivalency Assessment System (SEAS) and receiving a disposition report that indicates your education and competencies are substantially equivalent to a Canadian-educated occupational therapist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your disposition report indicates that your education and competencies are not substantial equivalent to a Canadian-educated OT, your application will be referred to the College Registration Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Substantial Equivalency Assessment System has five components:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Academic Credential Assessment (ACA)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Curriculum and Fieldwork Review<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SEAS Language Assessment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jurisprudence Knowledge Assessment Test (JKAT)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Competency Assessment Interview<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>To apply to SEAS, please visit:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/acotro-acore.org\/registering-in-canada\/were-you-educated-outside-of-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/acotro-acore.org\/registering-in-canada\/were-you-educated-outside-of-canada\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-currency-evidence-of-practice\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>Currency &#8211; Evidence of Practice<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p><strong>Recent graduation or recent occupational therapy practice provides evidence that you are current in the knowledge, skills and judgement needed to provide safe, effective, and ethical care.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To meet the currency requirement, you must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have graduated within the past 18 months<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Or&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide evidence of 600 hours of occupational therapy practice within the past three years<br><br><em>For example: letter from employer or record of employment<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do not meet either of these options, you must complete a College approved refresher program to meet the currency requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exception for Substantial Equivalency Assessment System (SEAS)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The SEAS process generally takes one year to complete. View our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/applicants\/national-exam-information\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"328\">National Exam<\/a>&nbsp;webpage for key information. Full details are on<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>the CAOT\u2019s NOTCE website at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.notce-enae.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notce-enae.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You will<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>not be able to write the exam until it is confirmed by the College that you meet the education requirement<\/strong>.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>After receiving your completed SEAS report and your application to our College, we can confirm your eligibility for the exam with CAOT.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-professional-liability-insurance\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>Professional Liability Insurance<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p><strong>Professional liability insurance with a sexual abuse therapy and counseling fund endorsement is mandatory for registration with the College<\/strong>. The requirements for professional liability insurance are set out in Part 19 of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/COTO-Bylaws-2025.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"1014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College bylaws<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The College has confirmed that the insurance coverage offered (as of August 1, 2017) by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caot.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT)<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.osot.on.ca\/imis15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists (OSOT)<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aon.com\/canada\/aha\/ot\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aon Healthcare Advantage<\/a>&nbsp;meets the College requirements. You are required to send the College a copy of your insurance certificate that includes the policy number and expiry date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The College does not endorse any insurance provider. It is the is the responsibility of each occupational therapist (OT) to determine which insurance provider and policy best meets their needs. The above noted insurance providers are third parties and not affiliated with the College. The College provides this information so OTs are aware of policies that the College has confirmed meet the requirements of the bylaws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insurance may be purchased elsewhere, however, evidence that it meets the College&#8217;s requirements must be sent to the College for review prior to acceptance.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section-block has-fade-in-up  align wp-block-acf-content-section\" id=\"section-suitability-to-practise\">\n    <div class=\"section-header \">\n        <h2>Suitability to Practise<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"content-section\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n        <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>The purpose of the suitability to practise requirement includes the protection of the public, the maintenance of high ethical standards, and the maintenance of public confidence in the profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be required to answer a series of questions on the application about your suitability to practise occupational therapy. The questions pertain to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>occupational therapy practice;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>practice of other professions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>offences;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>bail conditions or restrictions; and,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your ability to practise occupational therapy safely and ethically.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Every applicant must submit the results of a current Vulnerable Sector (VS) Check to the College as part of their application. If you do not register within six months of the date the results were issued by the police, you will be required to submit an updated VS Check. The College uses the results of the VS Check to verify information pertaining to offences; bail conditions or restrictions; and any other relevant conduct.<br><br>Please visit our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/applicants\/vulnerable-sector-checks\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"329\">VS Check webpage<\/a>&nbsp;for full details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you hold (or have held) a license or registration to practise occupational therapy outside of Ontario, and\/or if you hold (or have held) a license or registration to practise in a profession other than occupational therapy in Ontario or elsewhere, you need to complete a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/regulatory-history-form.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"1451\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Regulatory History Form<\/a>. Please forward the form to the appropriate organization and have them complete it and return it directly to the College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the Registrar has concerns about your ability to practice occupational therapy safely and ethically, your application will be referred to the Registration Committee for a review. Forwarding a photocopy of the document is sufficient.
