{"id":6684,"date":"2025-09-10T14:24:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T18:24:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/?p=6684"},"modified":"2025-09-10T14:24:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T18:24:14","slug":"2025-2026-covid-19-and-seasonal-respiratory-illnesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/news-articles\/2025-2026-covid-19-and-seasonal-respiratory-illnesses\/","title":{"rendered":"2025-2026 COVID-19 and Seasonal Respiratory Illnesses"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Current Situation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In August 2025, Ontario\u2019s Ministry of Health released the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/files\/2025-08\/moh-seasonal-respiratory-pathogen-guide-en-2025-08-27.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seasonal Respiratory Pathogen Guide Version 3 (ontario.ca)<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As we approach the fall and winter seasons, the risk from influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and other respiratory pathogens is again expected to rise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>COVID-19 continues to impact the health and well-being of the people of Ontario.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Point of Care risk assessments continue to be an essential part of providing safe and effective occupational therapy service delivery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Guidance for Occupational Therapists<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Occupational therapists must follow the requirements in the:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>College\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coto.org\/resources\/standard-overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Standards of Practice<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ministry of Health\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/files\/2025-08\/moh-seasonal-respiratory-pathogen-guide-en-2025-08-27.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seasonal Respiratory Pathogen Guide Version 3 (ontario.ca)<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publichealthontario.ca\/en\/Health-Topics\/Infection-Prevention-Control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Public Health Ontario\u2019s IPAC guidance<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guidance from local Public Health Units<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employer\/organizational policies and procedures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete a point-of-care risk assessment to determine the appropriate IPAC measures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If an occupational therapist or their clients want to learn more, please see the Ministry of Health information about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/protection-respiratory-illnesses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protection from respiratory illnesses<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When conducting a risk assessment, occupational therapists should consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the client is experiencing any symptoms related to COVID-19 and\/or Seasonal Respiratory Pathogens at the time of the appointment; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If risks can be controlled through infection prevention and control (IPAC) measures and\/or Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (for example, masking).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The College will continue to monitor communications from the Ministry of Health about this year\u2019s seasonal respiratory pathogens.
